August Book Review: Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock & Roll by Ann & Nancy Wilson
I will never forget the first time I heard Heart. I was probably around 6 or 7 riding in the front seat of my dad’s ’94 Mustang. He had Barracuda full blast as he was playing guitar on the steering wheel. It was the first time I ever heard a rock band with a female lead vocalist before.
Nothing beats two incredibly talented women out-rocking most of the men around them. That was Heart to me. When it came time for me to find a book for this month I knew just the one. Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Roll is the perfect bio for the 2 mainstays of Heart: Ann and Nancy Wilson.
Written by both Ann and Nancy, Kicking & Dreaming is almost like an episode of VH1’s Behind the Music. Let me touch on a few of my favorite things about this book.
Magic Man was really about Ann’s lover at the time.
I was fascinated with this bit of information. She wrote that song about her lover, Michael Fisher who helped launch Heart’s career in the early days. It’s one of my favorite Heart songs to this day.
Being a female rock star came with a lot of judgement.
The press was not very fair to Ann & Nancy during their early days in the band. Reporters made snide comments on Ann’s weight and remarks about Nancy and if her guitar was really plugged in. Despite all the backlash Ann and Nancy pushed through that to find continued success even after 40 years.
Ann & Nancy both played a part in Seattle’s Grunge scene.
Both Wilson girls lived in Seattle during the rise of grunge music. They hung out and often partied with the guys of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. I thought that it was pretty cool how close they were to that developing genre of music.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about a band that I’ve respected for a long time. It’s a quick read and one that will hold your interest throughout. I’m still debating which book to read and review for September. I have two in mind but the verdict isn’t out yet on which one I should chose!
