April Book: Sick In The Head by Judd Apatow
April has been a rough month for both reading and writing! My original book for April was Pretty & Rich but after I got 3 pages in, I threw the book across the room vowing to take it to Goodwill the next chance I had. (It was HORRIBLE. Don’t even bother looking it up.) I’ve been wanting to read Judd Apatow’s book ever since I found it at the bookstore. I flipped through the pages and decided one day I’d read it. After my April Book fail, I bought his book on my Kindle the next day.
First let me start off by saying I have yet to finish this book. It’s not that I don’t like the book it’s more the format of it. Sick In The Head is a collection of interviews Judd did with comedians throughout his career. He started in high school chasing after his favorites comedians claiming he was affiliated with a radio station. Pretty genius if you ask me!
One of the main reasons why I haven’t finished this book yet is because of the formats. It’s not the type of book you get sucked into and can’t put down. This book is like reading a magazine article. One right after the other. It gets a bit tedious! Sick In The Head is the type of book you pick up every so often and read an interview in then go about your day.
Judd is a pretty good interviewer. His subjects range from his first roommate, Adam Sandler, to Mel Brooks. He does a wonderful job connecting with each interviewee and sharing their stories in comedy. One of my favorite stories so far is all about his journey with Freaks & Geeks. Even though the show lasted one season it churned out some of the funniest actors: Jason Segal, Busy Phillips and of course Seth Rogen. Paul Feig best known for Bridesmaids wrote the episodes for Freaks & Geeks based on his days in high school.
This is the kind of book you read over time. Free moment during the day? Pick it up and read an interview. It’s not a book I plan to finish soon but over time. Until then I’ll savor each interview/story if I’m in the mood to!
