Today’s pose on my challenge list was dancer but since I have never done that pose before I decided to replace it with one of my favorite poses in yoga: Pigeon pose with a slight variation. I am all about hip flexibility stretches so when I tried pigeon in my yoga class I was hooked! It reminds me a lot of doing a split in dance but with a focus on your hips. I like to try the different variations of this pose because it feels great!
To get into this pose I start off in downward facing dog. I lift one leg up in the air for three-legged dog then flow that leg gently through my hands. I set my foot on the ground for pigeon. I challenge myself by lifting one hand up at a time. As my practice continues to grow I will be able to lift both hands up and hold it. Then I reach my hands forward in front of me for a nice long stretch. After some relaxing breaths I lift my upper body back up and lift my bottom leg up towards my hand for a an extra hip opener.
If you have trouble squaring your hips in this pose, gently place a block underneath your butt. It will help you get set in this position properly!
