What do you get when you mix chemistry with modern cuisine? You get a unique dining experience that’s bound to thrill! Located a block from the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach’s Historic Downtown is The Chemist. Opened in 2015, this place serves up the best in craft cocktails and modern cuisine with a scientific twist.
The first thing you notice when you walk in is the decor. Modern design elements and quirky colored lights make The Chemist feel like fun place to dine and drink! Keeping to the science theme, each table has a periodic element listed on it. We sat at the Argon table which had a lit up cocktail menu and glass beakers for water. It doesn’t take much for me to be amused so I found the beakers quite entertaining to drink out of!
While I was planning our trip to Myrtle Beach, I came across this place via Yelp and it had incredible reviews. I knew we just had to try this place out even if it was during our short weekend visit. From the cocktail menu, I ordered the Thyme Machine. It’s a gin cocktail with honey simple syrup, lemon juice, blood orange bitters and soda water. Thyme ice cubes keep this cocktail cool and flavorful.
Judd opted for the beer flight which included 4 brews which were made locally.
The owner of the restaurant came up to our table and handed us menus. It was a new menu than one previously listed on their website but it was filled with unique choices. Judd ordered the Sriracha Chicken Sandwich. It was fired chicken covered in a Sriracha honey glaze and asian slaw. It was served with homemade sweet potato tots that were absolutely perfect!
I ordered the Shrimp Scampi. It was served with capellini pasta, asparagus and a citrus butter foam sauce. I know what you’re probably thinking…foam sauce? It made the dish lighter and surprisingly flavorful!
The Chemist is a great place to have a date night or just bring a group of friends for late night cocktails. Like many of the beach side restaurants, they are busier during the summer season. (Typically between Memorial Day and Labor Day.) Be sure to order one of their cocktails…they are served in science beakers! Also, the staff is incredibly helpful with suggestions in case you are torn between menu items! Check out their menu items here.
