Meditation takes time and a lot of patience in order to perfect the practice. I started my mindful journey last week one night after a long day of work. You know the saying, “Practice makes perfect?” I need a LOT of practice with meditation. I knew it would be difficult to tune out of my mind for even 5 minutes. I started sitting comfortably in Indian-style with my hands on my knees, palms facing up towards the ceiling. I turned the lights off in the room and tried to feel every breath I took. Counting, “1,2,3..” Remembering that I forgot to set my timer. Lose focus, start timer, close eyes. Counting, “1,2,3,4,5…” My mind began to wonder on everything plaguing me including work. After about 5 minutes of distractions I gave up for the night. I vowed to try again the next day when I wasn’t feeling defeated.
The next day I found an article suggesting an app called Breathe. (You can get the app here.) The app features daily check-ins regarding how you feel physically and mentally than guides you through a short meditation dependent upon your emotions and feelings. I decided to try it out. That night before bed I plugged my headphones into my iPhone and started going through the app. It starts with 10 seconds to close your eyes and tune into yourself physically and mentally. Then it moves you to answer how you feel. Based on those answers, it recommends the type of meditation you need. I was recommended the “Relax, Ground and Clear” meditation which is about 6 minutes total. Nice and short but very effective! This meditation helped me feel calm and relaxed. I was ready to fall asleep with ease after the meditation.
