There are two pieces of wedding advice I was willing to take and use. As many of my family and friends know, I am pretty stubborn and hard-headed when it comes to advice!
The first piece of advice I received way before I had even met my husband. I was working at a grocery store as a cashier and one of my regular customers came through my line. We always had small talk whenever she came through. She told me she was planning a wedding for later in the year and gave me one simple piece of advice:
If you want total control over your plans and guest list, pay for everything yourself.
At first I thought she was crazy. Denying family assistance seems crazy. But then I got to thinking. My parents have two kids total: my brother and me. The average wedding costs around $25k-$30k and that’s an AVERAGE. For two kids to get married would cost them a max total of $60k. That’s insane!
When Judd and I started planning our wedding, we kept in mind the kind of budget we wanted to stick to and knew that simplicity mattered. We made sacrifices for the things we wanted the most (photography, venue and food) and cutback where we could. We told both of our families we would pay for everything ourselves. We wanted full responsibility over the planning. My mother did help us pay for flowers merely because I was going to cut them from the wedding completely. Judd’s mom covered our rehearsal lunch which was a big weight off of our shoulders. But both families let us do what we wanted to do with our wedding. It was a nice freedom to have!
The second best piece of advice came from my supervisor at work.
You cannot yell at anyone in your wedding dress.
(This is hilarious and serious at the same time!) I love this piece of advice. You spent time and money getting gorgeous in your wedding dress no one wants to be yelled at by something so beautiful! (No Bridezillas Allowed!) The morning of my wedding, I felt calm, cool and collected! No bride she be yelling at all on her wedding day unless it’s out of excitement during the reception and there is booze involved!
