Since I started cooking I try to look for ways to spruce up basic meals. Pasta is both easy to make and delicious which is why I make it quite frequently in my house. A few weeks ago I was watching Food Network when I came across an interesting way to cook pasta. The chef had cooked her noodles in water and red wine. I bet you are thinking to yourself, seriously?! Red Wine?! I was dying to try it for myself! I found her recipe online and decided to make my own take on it.
I started with homemade tomato sauce courtesy of The Lo Down Blog. I love Lauren’s sauce because it’s simple to make and requires minimal ingredients. Once I had my sauce prepared I focused on the pasta. I derived my version from Damaris Phillips from the show Southern At Heart. Here’s what I needed:
- 5 Cups of Water
- 3 Cups of Wine (and 1 cup to drink!)
- Spaghetti (I like thin spaghetti.)
I brought the water and wine to a boil then put the pasta in to cook thoroughly. Once it was cooked, I drained the water and wine from the pot to leave the beautifully stained red spaghetti ready for sauce. I placed the spaghetti on a plate and topped it with a spoon full of tomato sauce and served with bread. needless to say this recipe was a HIT with my husband who comes from an Italian family. I always feel pressure to make my meals top-notch so it felt great when my husband suggested we “make this more often!” For Thanksgiving this year, we will be hosting our family in an Italian Thanksgiving complete with Spaghetti with my mom’s homemade sauce and Judd’s grandmother’s meatballs. I plan on cooking the spaghetti in red wine for that holiday as well as serving red wine at dinner!
