In the last decade I have moved a total of 6 times. That’s 6 opportunities to master the art of keeping myself from going crazy while moving! Granted the first few times I was just moving from dorm to dorm with no furniture. Over these last 6 years I have become a moving pro. We went from having our parents rent uHauls and move us to hiring movers to help us settle into our town home. Here are a few tips on how to stay sane while moving.
Start Packing Early. This is the best advice I can offer! My general rule of thumb is to begin packing a month prior to the move. Even if you start with little things, every little bit helps. Packing a month out gives me time to get organized, label boxes and start de-cluttering our place before the move.
Throw Out Junk. My favorite part of moving is the opportunity to de-clutter. Decide what you need and things you want but throw out all the crap you don’t! You will physically feel lighter just by throwing out stuff. We are big fans of donating to Goodwill, too. Fill up a couple of trash bags and deliver them to your local Goodwill donation center.
Get Organized. With anything in life, staying organized during your move is vital to staying on top of things. Keep your move-in paperwork together and easily accessible. Label boxes based on items and room where the items will live. It helps the packing and unpacking process if you know where things are going.
Take a Deep Breath. Moving sucks! But it doesn’t have to be if you prepare yourself, de-clutter and stay organized. Take a deep breath, stay focused and remember that moving is only temporary. My favorite part of moving is the unpacking and decorating a new place.
