One of my favorite things about living somewhere new is getting to explore new towns and cities. Last week we ventured west to Columbia, SC or Cola Town as it’s known by residents who live there. I’ve been looking forward to this trip ever since Judd bought us tickets to see the Foo Fighters in July. They made a stop at the Colonial Life arena and we managed to make it a 24 hour trip.
We drove out early in the day in order to explore downtown a bit. When we arrived, we decided to check out The Vista. It’s a section of downtown with shops, bars and restaurants. We parked the car and decided to walk to a restaurant a friend recommended we try.
Lunch at Motor Supply Company Bistro
Located in an old engine supply building, Motor Supply Co. has been open since 1989. It was one of the first restaurants to open on the vista. The food is all provided locally which means the menu changes daily. What we had while we were there may not be what they have if you go but it’s still worth trying!
We were seated in the sunroom of the building. It was a tad bit hot for my liking in there but the service was pretty good.
Judd ordered the Turkey Sandwich. In true South Carolina fashion, it was served with pimento cheese and grilled onions on an everything bagel. If there is one kind of bagel Judd loves it’s an everything bagel!
I opted for the crab cake sandwich. It had lettuce, tomato and a pepper aioli on a brioche bun. Both our sandwiches came with fresh fruit.
After lunch we walked around downtown a bit. We stopped off at Starbucks for some fuel as it would be a late night.
Dinner at Sure Fire Tacos
After we stopped off at the hotel and changed for the concert we headed back downtown for dinner. It was a challenge finding a place to eat. We started at a pub but when we waited 10 minutes for service we decided to walk out and find something else. We happened to walk by Sure Fire Tacos and noticed they weren’t busy at all.
If you’re looking for a quick dinner that’s affordable I highly recommend Sure Fire Tacos. We walked right up to the counter, ordered and before we knew it our food arrived. Their menu has every taco combination you can imagine.
I have a deep love of tacos. They are one of my favorite dinner items to make at home but to also eat out. I decided to order the Big Hass taco. It had fried avocado (yes, you read that correctly!), black beans and pico de gallo. It came with chips and queso. Their tacos are a decent size so feel free to order more than one. But I figured since I also had chips and queso I’d be plenty full!
Judd went for the build your own nachos. He topped the chips with guacamole, sour cream, cheddar cheese, onions, tomatoes, grilled chicken and queso. It was a big portion but it didn’t intimidate Judd!
Seriously I am still dreaming of those tacos and queso! We may be back in Columbia just for that alone!
The Show: Foo Fighters
I’ve waited such a long time to see the Foo Fighters live. They never came to Florida and I never traveled to see them prior to this show. Since Columbia is a few hours away from where we live now it was an easy decision for us to buy tickets.
The show was beyond magical. It was everything I expected and more. The Foo Fighters played for 3 straight hours without stopping. We didn’t make it back to our hotel until 1am. It was totally worth it!
Our short trip to Columbia was a busy one. We didn’t have a whole lot of time to explore the capital. But the plan is to go back and explore it in the future.
