About a year ago, my body quickly decided that dairy wasn’t for me at all. (You can read about that here.) I spent 2-weeks trying to trudge through feeling absolutely horrible and what was causing me to feel that way. A family friend suggested it be a food allergy either to gluten or to lactose. Gluten allergies usually can be discovered through testing and I knew I wasn’t that sick. The lactose allergy was the most likely thing as I put cheese on everything I make. (Seriously, I would even eat it straight out of the bag.) I decided to give lactose-free living a try. From that day forward I omitted lactose from my diet. On occasion I would indulge with the help of a Lactaid pill that made digestion easier. Amazing things started happening the moment I gave it up.
- My constant stomach aches/bloating went away.
- My skin cleared up.
- I felt better about eating foods and began to realize that I didn’t miss lactose.
Although, I get cravings for weird things like random Mac and Cheese or the ever-so-delicious Cheeseburger removing lactose from my diet helped me also branch out and find new things to try in its place. I have just recently started eating cereal again thanks to Soy Milk which I love. (I hated regular milk with a passion.) If I make a salad dressing that is creamy I substitute the yogurt with avocados which is another one of my favorite things. Lactose-free eating has helped me in some many ways and even though I occasionally have a bit of lactose with the help of a pill I can enjoy it without feeling guilty or sick.
