June Feature: Home Sweet Town Home
The kitchen is one of my favorite places in the house. I fell in love with cooking and baking last summer and learned to appreciate the kitchen space. I like an open kitchen with lots of counter space and storage. I like the kitchen to open up to the living room area so I can talk with family and friends while I cook and prep meals. So when we first looked at our new home I was excited that the kitchen featured all of these things. My new kitchen space has a few features I love:
- Flat-top oven space with warming burner. I love this feature! If I make a small side dish like rice or noodles, I can keep them on the warming burner so it doesn’t get cold before serving the meal.
- A pantry by the fridge. Our old place didn’t have a pantry which meant that our cabinets were over-taken with food items. It got very messy. The pantry features a lot of shelves to put items from my reusable grocery bags, boxed and canned foods to Gus’ dog food and medicines. Having a pantry has allowed us to utilize the cabinet space for dishes, glassware and Tupperware.
- Bar top. We have a large bar top space at our new kitchen which will be great to eat at on nights when I don’t feel like setting the table! The bar top features some nice overhead lighting as well. (I still need to pick up some bar stools!)
When it came time to unpack our new place, I chose the kitchen as my starting point. It was a little overwhelming at first to figure out where to put everything and how I wanted my counters to look but once I got started I was on a roll! It took about an hour and a half to get everything where I wanted it to be. (And that’s with distractions because if you know me you know I cannot sit still and work on cleaning or re-arranging a room without getting distracted.) My new kitchen opens up into the living and dining room. It looks out into the porch which backs up to a nature preserve. In fact, just the other day I spotted a bunny while I was doing the dishes! There is a lot of counter space in this kitchen which I promptly filled with my essentials: toaster, Kitchenaid Mixer, Food processor, wine and knife set. I also displayed my red flour and sugar canisters nicely next to the stove. The sink is large and features a pull-down faucet which makes cleaning dirty pots and pans a cinch.
The most important thing about my new kitchen space is how comfortable I feel in it. I can parade around in it while whipping up some sweet treats and enjoy slaying new recipes which I am always challenging myself with. Being comfortable in my new kitchen also ties in with how I feel about our new home in general…it feels like home!
