As a Floridian, I had never seen snow before. I had plenty of opportunities growing up: a trip to NYC for Thanksgiving, Pennsylvania after Christmas and the mountains of North Carolina in the winter. But my snow luck didn’t exist. Each time was oddly warm which meant no snow. I was pretty heartbroken. Then I moved to South Carolina…
On the week of my year anniversary of moving to SC, the weather gods smiled down and graced my backyard with snow. SNOW. At first I didn’t believe it. I tracked the weather all day and it was mostly sleet. Then magic happened. At 4pm Wednesday afternoon, small snow flakes began to fall. I ran outside to experience my very first snowfall.
I usually dread the cold. Winter isn’t my favorite season. But when it snowed it was magical! All of sudden I got excited. I ran around in it. I walked through it. Each step crunching with the sound of snow. What an incredible experience!
Gus wasn’t too sure about the snow. He couldn’t quite walk right in it! But with enough time he got used to it. It’s still a little too cold for his liking!
The morning after the snow fell it stuck around. I remember waking up that morning wondering if the snow was still there relieved when I noticed that it was. I grabbed my camera and went crazy!
Even the creek behind our home froze over. A rare sight to say the least!
Our street was covered in snow and ice but it slowly melted away as the day went on. Not going to lie…I’m going to be sad when all the snow eventually does melt. (We still have snow in the backyard.)
It was the perfect way to celebrate our year anniversary of moving to South Carolina.
It was a year ago that we left eager for change and new scenery. As I watched the Jacksonville skyline disappear in my rearview mirror that day, I knew we were heading for something awesome. As scary as it was to leave everything we knew behind and start fresh I am so glad we did it.
Over the last year we have done so many new things:
- Started new jobs we both love.
- Made new friends.
- Explored our new state.
- Ate like southerners!
- Bought our first home.
- Celebrated our first holiday away from family.
And now I can cap it all off by saying we saw snow for the first time! I’m so glad we took the plunge and moved to South Carolina a year ago. It was one of the best decisions we’ve made!
