Being 4th of July weekend, I found today’s cat & cow pose easy on the beach! This pose is a nice way to warm up the core of your body. I usually begin my yoga practice with a sequence of cow and cats. I sequence my breathing with each transition into cat or cow. Take your time doing this pose and really move through your breathing.
Today’s pose is a favorite of mine, Child’s pose. It was the first pose I had learned in yoga and one I frequent a lot at home if my lower back is hurting. Start off in table top position with your shoulders over your hands and hips over ankles. Push your lower body back onto your heels and straighten out your arms. I prefer a wide-legged stance but you can also keep your knees together and place your arms back behind you for a more restorative option.
If you are struggling in a pose during class or just need to take a few breaths to get focused, get into child’s pose. There you can work on your breath and still maintain a stretch.
Today’s pose is Mountain pose. I really enjoy this one because it is simple to do yet so much goes into it. I have a tendency to want to lift my shoulders on this one! Gus even tried to get in on the yoga practice! This pose is a great stretch in the morning when you first get up. It stretches your entire body.
The past few months I have been going to yoga on a weekly basis. I go to yoga weekly in order to tame my stresses, relax my mind and body mid-week and work on my flexibility. Once a week doesn’t feel like enough to get me to the stage I want to be at with my yoga practice so I decided to create a challenge for myself. I will still attend my weekly yoga class as usual but I will practice my yoga every single day of July and work on mastering these poses below. I challenge myself because I always say I am going to practice yoga at home then I don’t ever do it. For this challenge to be successful, I had to dedicate a room in my house where I can lay my mat down, turn the lights off, light some candles and go through my practice in peace. (No dogs or husbands allowed!) It will be a room for myself to focus on my practice and achieve this monthly yoga challenge goal!

Today is the 1st day of July so I will be starting with Mountain Pose. Since I have class tonight, I will post a picture afterwards!
What are you challenging yourself with this month? Will it be a fitness challenge or maybe a writing challenge? Share with us!
For 19 years and during all of my childhood, I danced. I took ballet classes, jazz classes and hip hop classes. I kept myself healthy and in shape by doing this 4-5 times a week until I got into college. It was hard to balance exercise with my full-time college course load and part time job. I put exercising on the back burner until this year when I decided it was time I get back into something that would keep me healthy and happy. (It was also recommended by my doctor who saw how stressed out I was.) I was never a gym person so I knew a gym membership was NOT the route for me. Nor was running with my bad dancer’s knees. I got in touch with a friend from high school who moved to Jacksonville for work and we decided to get our butts into yoga.
I love the way yoga challenges my stretching. Each class I challenge myself to complete successful yoga flow through my breathing. (I have to admit, my breathing needs some work but you have to start somewhere!) After 1-2 classes per week for the last month I can say I am pretty hooked! Yoga has helped me calm myself down if I am feeling stressed just simply by breathing and it’s a heck of a workout! With yoga, I am able to focus on my physical health as well as my mental health.
