Today I am thankful for my yoga practice. In February, I started going to yoga classes once a week. I would try different classes at different studios until I came across my current studio. I found a groove for my practice and a teacher I enjoy learning from. I am forever grateful for my yoga practice. It has taught me to slow down and appreciate life around me. It has helped me when I feel stressed or anxious. Just the breathing practice alone has helped me get to a calmer place. When I started practicing I wasn’t too consistent about going to class. But in May I decided to commit myself to my practice and the growth that would come after consistency. For the last 6 months I have gone every single week. I took home new poses to try to master while focusing on my breathing. One day while in class I discovered my breath and how it effected my practice. It was both moving and powerful. Ever since that day I have tried to keep my focus on my breathing-breathing through each pose, breathing out stress or anxiety and breathing in happiness. Along with breathing and new poses yoga has also taught me to listen to my body more-both in practice and out. If a pose feels painful I modify or come out of it. If I feel tired at home instead of fighting to stay awake I walk myself upstairs to bed. Listening to your body is important especially when it comes to rest.
This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking a yoga class outside. Sun salutations and downward dogs under tall oak trees and the sun peaking through really brought my practice to another level! (Plus it was a cool 66 degrees the morning of class!) If you have the opportunity to take a yoga class outside…I highly recommend it! Namaste.
