5 years ago I walked down the hallway of my dorm to meet my future husband. Little did I know it then but that night changed my life.
It was a frigid evening in early December. I was hanging out with one of my coworkers in my dorm room. We bought a bottle of red wine and Publix subs and attempted to study for our finals. We were failing miserably at focusing when my friend suggested I meet one of the guys on her intramural softball team. She had mentioned that he was from the same county as me. I said sure.
Apparently we had lived down the hall from each other all semester and never met. As we walked down the hall to meet Judd-I recognized him. He looked strangely familiar. The light bulb went off in my head. He always held the door open for me leading to our dorm tower. Every single time he held it for me and I would follow up with a thank you. We said hello to each other and introduced ourselves. “Hi, I’m Shannon and I’m from the island.” He replied with, “Hi, I’m Judd and I’m from Palm Bay.” To which I followed up with “I feel sorry for you…” Harsh I know but the area he was from was always on the news. It was a bit of an inside joke where I grew up.
From that moment on we sat in the hallway and talked for hours. We discussed what we were going to school for, what finals we had that week and the music we liked. We both had our hardest finals the next day yet continued to talk in the hall. (We both ended up passing those finals.) Four hours later and it was about 11pm and we both figured it be a good idea to call it a night. We said our goodbyes and left hoping I would see him again soon.
The next day I found him on Facebook and shot him a quick “great meeting you” message. He replied and the conversation started up again. We exchanged numbers and texted each other through that week. By Wednesday, I knew he would be leaving for home for the holidays and figure I take a chance and ask him to hang out one last time. He said yes to my surprise but I never assumed it was a date…until that night.
Thursday night of that week was our scheduled hang out night. I had an advertising final until 8pm then I would pick him up to go out for some live music. We headed to one of my favorite beach bars. When we got there we headed straight to the bar for drinks. It was after all the end of both of our first semesters at UNF and it was time to celebrate! As I went to order my beer Judd stepped up and offered to pay. Okay so maybe this was a date after all! We enjoyed a few hours of music before leaving.
We got back to the dorms late but still wanted to hang out. We sat around listening to all of our favorite music and just passing the time. It was probably the best and most random date I had ever been on! I invited him back to my dorm to watch a movie but at that time it was about 3am and we were both tired. He ended up falling asleep sitting on my bed leaning against the wall of my dorm-I decided it was time for us to call it a night. He left for the evening but I knew I’d be spending time with him during winter break.
Over the course of 3 weeks during winter break, we made plans to go out on dates. We met up for drinks at a local brewery then to Denny’s because we were starving! We walked around Downtown Melbourne at 2am where a man came up to us and told me that he knew Judd loved me. (Awkward yet not at all a lie.) We went to a Greek place and danced on the tables before and after our meal. I took him to my favorite bar where we sat at the bar, sipped on our beers and where Judd nervously asked to kiss me for the first time. (I said yes of course!)
Finally the day after Christmas in 2010, Judd made us official. He was the best Christmas gift I had ever received. Five years later and we are happily married with a fur child, Gus. It feels like forever ago that we just met but at the same time certain parts feel like just yesterday!
