Day 4 of my yoga challenge is a Seated Twist or Ardha Matsyendrasana. This is a great twist to increase the flexibility in your spine and aid in digestion. It’s a personal favorite of mine as it forces me to sit up straight and keep my shoulders back. I have a tendency to slouch and as I have practiced this pose I have noticed a difference in my seated posture. My yoga class is helping my posture…something which my mother always hounds on me for! (“Sit up straight, Shannon!”)
Start with your legs directly out in front of you in Staff pose. Cross one leg over the other and hug your knee with the opposite arm. Move your opposite arm behind you and set in on the ground. Take a deep breath in and twist through the exhale. The key to this posture is to keep your spine straight. I like to modify this posture by picking up my left foot and stretching my leg straight out in front of me.
